Gerospina schachtiWeeks FormationMillard County, UT
CambrianHere is the first known, complete specimen of Gerospina schachti found by my father, Robert Schacht, Sr. some 10 years ago. This trilobite was only known by parts and was named Cedaria sp., by Matthew Beebe, due to the minor similarities it had with the Cedaria genus. Since no complete specimens were available for study, he had no idea of the other major characteristics that this trilobite had. This specimen was the first specimen to show the extremely long axial spine which extends from the eighth axial ring. The trilobite has been named Gerospina schachti in honor of my father. This outstanding specimen measures almost 7/8" long.

It was found 2 years after the original specimen was found in an area that had a reddish matrix instead of the typical yellow matrix that the Weeks Formation is famous for. It has excellent fossilization, is extremely 3-D, and measures almost 1" long.
