Calymene Trilobites

Calymene breviceps
Waldron Shale Formation
Shelby County, IN
Silurian

Here is an absolutely pristine example of the most common trilobite found in the Waldron Shale Formation. This trilobite, Calymene breviceps, was commonly found, but not this well preserved, in the St. Paul Stone Quarry when quarrying operations allowed for collecting. Collecting is no longer allowed and specimens of this quality are hard to come by. A specimen of this quality and size is a one-in-a-lifetime find. It measures exactly 2" long and is almost perfectly symmetrical. Needless to say, this may be the nicest Calymene ever found.

Here is a beautiful and perfectly prone example of the most common trilobite found in the Waldron Shale Formation. This trilobite, Calymene breviceps, was commonly found in the St. Paul Stone Quarry when quarrying operations allowed for collecting. Collecting is no longer allowed and specimens of this quality are hard to come by. This Calymene measures 1 5/8" long and is nicely centered on a squared matrix piece.

Here is a beautiful natural combination piece containing an excellent Calymene breviceps trilobite and a huge and aesthetic Eucalyptocrinites crassus crinoid cup. The Calymene measures  1 7/8" long and is nicely inflated while the Eucalyptocrinites measures 1 1/2" tall and 1 5/8" wide. This is one of the best combination pieces ever found in the Waldron Shale.

Here is a beautiful example of the most common trilobite found in the Waldron Shale Formation, but what makes this trilobite so unusual is that it was found and cleaned ventrally (bottom) side facing up. As far as I know, this is the only known Waldron Calymene that has been cleaned exposing the hypostome (mouthplate). The hypostome has beautiful definition as you can see by the pictures. Also found in association with the Calymene is a Dalmanites halli pygidium, a partial Eucalyptocrinities crassus crinoid stem, some brachiopods, and some bryozoan making this a very unique association plate. The Calymene measures 1 1/8" long and is nicely centered on a squared matrix piece. This piece is a true testament of the Silurian sea floor found in the Waldron Shale.
